Island Near Phuket Off the southeast coast of Phuket are a half dozen islands ringed with great beaches and blessed with crystal clear waters perfect for diving and snorkeling. All have moderately pricecf resorts associated with travel agencies or tour operators in Phuket town, who can help with transportation and reservations. Longtail boats to the following islands can be hired at Rawai Beach, at the pier at Chalong Bay, and in Ban Makham near the old Phuket pier. Roundtrip fares for the entire longtail are B500-1000 depending on the season and your bargaining skills. More reliable but also more expensive are larger boats hired from professional groups such as Phuket Yacht Services or Thai Marine Leisure on Laem Prao. Boats can also be chartered on Chalong Beach from Marine Asia and Chalong Bay Boat Ko Lon Just a few kilometers from Chalong is the large and easily accessible island of Ko Lon with the small fishing village of Ban Ko Lon on the northem coast. Longtails take about 15 minutes from either Chalong or Rawai. Lori Pavilion: A 30-room resort on the north shore with 28 a/c bungalows, restaurant, and longtails to reach the more remote beaches. Ko Hae Thirty minutes by boat from Chalong is the beautiful island of Ko Hae, also called Coral Island for the outstanding reefs that encircle the elongated island. Although many of the coral reefs near Phuket have been destroyed by pollution, offshore dredging, or dynamite fishing, those around Ko Hae have somehow survived to complement the fine beaches and isolated coves of Ko Hae. Coral Island Resort: The only resort on the island has 40 a/c bungalows, restaurant, and dive facilities. Details can be arranged at the resort's of fice in Phuket town. Ko Maiton Ko Maiton, another gorgeous island one hour east of Chatong, proves the maxim that the greater the distance from Phuket, the more outstanding the beaches and underwater world. Maiton Resort: This expensive resort on the east coast was established by All Nippon Air ways and for many years catered exclusively to wealthy young Japanese on escorted tours. The newly appointed American manager now welcomes both Asian and Western guests to this strangely pseudo-Roman resort. Ko Taphao Yai Several small islands are 10 minutes offshore from Ban Makham. Taphao Yai Island Resort: A convenient place to reach with a ttered swimming pool, a few small beaches, and a/c bungalows spread over the rocky headlands. |
